Athienou municipality moved decisively to the twinning process with  the municipality of NeapoliAitoloakarnania in Greece which consists of 4 communities north of Agrinio.

The first phase of the twinning was completed by visiting council members of Neapolis to our community.  During the three-day celebrations the two municipalities signed the twinning between them.

Ceremonial proclamation of Mr. Philip Christopher to Honorary Citizen of Athienou

The City Council of Athienou unanimously approved the nomination of Philip Kristopher, President of the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA), to an honorary citizen of Athienou as a token of appreciation for his love and the close ties that link him with expatriates of Athienou and more widely with the Greeks everywhere.

The long and versatile fights of a worthy intertemporal fighter and genuine patriot for bringing justice to the suffering island of Cyprus, can only be recognized and honored decently, especially in these difficult times our country is facing. Philip Christopher was born on 22/10/1948 in Kyrenia and undoubtedly devoted a large effort and hard work to create, support and strengthen the effectiveness of proper enlightenment on the Cyprus problem in the US. It is remarkable and worthy of congratulations that he has voluntarily allocated huge financial resources and has become the cornerstone for the creation of the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus”.

Philip Christopher migrated to the US in October 1959 and is married to Christina Kouvari Christopher, a teacher by profession whotogether rejoice  their son Nick Philip Christopher that excels as a lawyer. He graduated from New York University in June 1970 with a Bachelor Of Arts Degree and thereafter is President / CEO of UTStarcom Personal Communications, Hauppauge, N.Y. The period 1980-1984 he served as the Senior President of the Cyprus Federation of America. During the presidency of Bill Clinton (1992-1996), he was a member of the Economic Council at the White House.

The diverse contribution of Philip Kristopher to the society, the economy and political life is momentous. President and Founder of the Pancyprian Association of America in Astoria, President of the International Coordinating Committee for Cyprus and President of PSEKA. He is also member of the following: Audiovox Corporation NY, Medical Center of Queens Hospital New York, Cardiovascular Center Kyrenia Flushing NY, United Hellenic American Congress, America-Cyprus Chamber NY, Cyprus Children’s Fund NY, National Coordinated Effort Washington, Cyprus Hellenic Affairs Committee order of AHEPA Washington.

Words cannot describe the personality and actions of this man, who for so many years devoted his life selflessly in the fight for the vindication of Cyprus. Award of souvenir gift as minimum token of appreciation to the timeless benefactor of Athienou, Nikos Mougiaris.

Nikos Mougiaris is a worthy citizen of Athienou, who honors his hometown and supports Athienou incessantly. As a minimum token of appreciation and gratitude he was awarded a souvenir gift to this timeless benefactor. The support continues steadily, always driven by the genuine love and concern for the good and progress of this community. The generous donations by Nikos Mougiaris are innumerable.

Nikos Mougiaris was born on 28/02/1945 in Athienou.  In April 1964 at the age of 19   he migrated to America. He struggled to live, study and work. Nevertheless, active, smart and intractable to difficulties, managed to excel professionally setting up one of the largest cosmetics industries in America. The various and numerous professional obligations never kept him away from his hometown.

Since 1983 he developed serious national and charitable activities both in America, Greece and Cyprus. Nikos Mougiaris always stood  by the side of Athienou as a silent supporter over all these years. We offer our warm gratitude to the constant annual financial support in charity work of the Social Welfare Council programs, for the construction and equipping of our kindergardenschool “Georgios and EleniDigeni (Ttanti)”, for significant financial contribution for the construction of the New Municipal Elderly House and for supporting the operating expenses.

Our wishes for every success in his  continuous struggles both nationally, socially, and professionally. Additionally, we would like to offer our sincere thanks for his contribution to the prosperity and improvement of the quality of life of our community, as a result of his sponsorship and his work.
