COMMUNITY CHILD NURSERY GEORGIOU AND ELENIS DIGENI TANTI

Athienou had the honor in 1945 to establish the first Pancyprian Kindergarten. The idea comes from Jeverton, who in cooperation with a group of Athienou citizens managed to create the first Kindergarten that was housed in various houses of the community.

Despite the adversity and the meager means, thanks to the zeal of various teachers, the community nursery managed to keep and serve its purposes.

Over time and with the change of life conditions, the necessity of creating an area that would provide care and education for the children of working mothers was created. This fact led to the decision to build a modern building to serve these needs.

This was achieved with the construction of the “George and Eleni Digeni Tanti”  child nursery in September 1991 under the auspices of the Community Welfare Council. Additional support came from the state and financial support came from Mr. Nikos Mougiaris, an Athienou expatriate and a successful businessman in USA.

The members of the Athienou Child Nursery management board are:

  • Petros Sammoutos – President
  • Georgia Hadjitheoharous – Vice President
  • Elpida Elias – Secretary
  • Konstantia Karousiou – Member
  • Alekos Sotiriou – Member
  • Michael Haraktas – Member
  • Chrystalla Trahilou – Member

The school stands out for its large spaces (classrooms, offices, living room, bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, warehouses) as well as a very large yard.

Its rooms are well equipped with furniture, educational games, dollhouses, puppet theaters, musical corners, libraries, easels, tapes, video, TV, baby cots and many more, that contribute to better childcare, entertainment and education.

A large part of the courtyard is tree-lined, while for child entertainment there is a gym shed, sheltered sandpit and many games such as slides, sailboats, swings, etc.

For better service and facilitation of parents, the school also has a mini bus to transport children to and from the nursery.

The operation of the nursery is divided into two shifts operating continuously from 6:45 am until 5:30pm on weekdays. Both sections operate with very low fees.

  • Department of Child Care: Nursery of children aged 2 and 3 years old. The department is supervised and directed by the Welfare Office.
  • Infant Care: It takes care of infants from 2 months to 2 years of age. It is also supervised and directed by the Welfare Office.

With well-trained staff, consisting of children’s playwrights, social workers, nurses and assistants, children spend pleasantly and creatively their hours with fairy tales, puppetry, talk, singing, dancing, gymnastics, painting, engaging in clay, dough, sand Water, etc.

Children learn to develop initiative and expand their imagination that cultivates their thinking, judgment and creativity, while at the same time acquiring knowledge, experiences and skills, thus having a strong foundation for their further education.

An integral part of the school’s program are the various events, such as lectures by psychologists, teachers, doctors, nutritionists and other scientists of various specialties, recreational and educational tours and visits.

The staff is in full cooperation with the Parents’ Association, cooperates and has the support of the Municipality and the Community Welfare Council and serves the purposes for which the nursery was founded.
